Understanding Item 82000: Rebates for Neurodevelopmental Assessments

Medicare item 82000 supports diagnostic assessment for:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Other neurodevelopmental or pervasive developmental conditions (PDD)

This rebate helps make a detailed Medicare autism assessment more accessible for eligible individuals.

❌ This item cannot be referred by a GP. It must be initiated by a paediatrician or psychiatrist.

Who Is Eligible for Item 82000 Support?

To be eligible for Medicare item 82000, the client must:

  • Be under 25 years of age at the time of referral
  • Be referred by a paediatrician or psychiatrist (not a GP)
  • Require an assessment for a suspected neurodevelopmental condition

  • Cognitive testing (e.g. WISC-V, WAIS-IV)
  • Behavioural and diagnostic screeners (e.g. ADOS-2, DIVA-5, BASC-3, CAT-Q)

  • A feedback session and detailed written report

Medicare Rebates and Assessment Fees

Our Fees page outlines session costs, out-of-pocket fees, and payment options.

Medicare rebates may be available for some psychology sessions with a valid referral or eligible Medicare plan.

As of 1 July 2026, current Medicare rebates include:

  • Clinical Psychologists: $149.05 per eligible session.
  • Registered Psychologists: $101.55 per eligible session.
  • Provisional Psychologists: Medicare rebates are not available.
  • Report fees: These fees are NOT subject to Medicare rebates.

Rebates are subject to Medicare eligibility, referral requirements, and session limits. Medicare rebates are processed after each appointment has been paid in full.
