Understanding Item 82000: Rebates for Neurodevelopmental Assessments
Medicare item 82000 supports diagnostic assessment for:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Other neurodevelopmental or pervasive developmental conditions (PDD)
This rebate helps make a detailed Medicare autism assessment more accessible for eligible individuals.
❌ This item cannot be referred by a GP. It must be initiated by a paediatrician or psychiatrist.
Who Is Eligible for Item 82000 Support?
To be eligible for Medicare item 82000, the client must:
- Be under 25 years of age at the time of referral
- Be referred by a paediatrician or psychiatrist (not a GP)
- Require an assessment for a suspected neurodevelopmental condition

Medicare Rebates and Assessment Fees
Medicare item 82000 provides a $96.65 rebate toward each assessment session. This covers a portion of the total cost. Our standard fees are detailed on our Fees page.
Note: Report fees and sessions with provisional psychologists are not eligible for rebates.
