Children working together during a school readiness activity

School Readiness Assessment

Starting school is a major milestone — and a school readiness assessment can help ensure your child is supported to thrive. At aMAZEin’ Minds Psychology, we assess a child’s developmental profile in relation to key domains needed for a smooth transition into Prep or 4-year-old kindergarten.

We work with both neurotypical and neurodivergent children and tailor each assessment to your child’s needs, age, and context.

Why Consider a School Readiness Assessment?

You might be wondering if your child is “ready” for Prep or Kinder — especially if they:

  • Were born close to the school cut-off
  • Are emotionally sensitive, shy, or anxious
  • Show advanced or uneven skills
  • Struggle with group settings, transitions, or separation
  • Have had interruptions in early learning (e.g. due to health or pandemic-related factors)
  • Have neurodevelopmental differences (e.g. ADHD, autism, speech delay)

A readiness assessment offers clarity — not a pass/fail outcome, but insights into how your child is tracking across key areas.

What A School Reasiness Assessment Measures

We use age-appropriate tools and play-based interactions to assess:

  • Cognitive development (e.g. reasoning, memory, early academic foundations)
  • Language and communication skills
  • Emotional regulation and social readiness
  • Attention and independence skills
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills
  • Daily living and self-care abilities (e.g. following routines, toileting, dressing, managing transitions)

We consider your child’s individual profile, cultural context, and home/school environment.

Our Approach

We don’t use deficit-based checklists or rigid “readiness” criteria. Our approach to school readiness assessment is:

  • 🧠 Developmentally informed – We consider where your child is at now, and what supports can help them thrive.
  • 🫱🏽‍🫲🏽 Neurodiversity-affirming – We value different ways of thinking, learning, and relating.
  • 🤝 Collaborative with families and educators – Your insights are essential in understanding your child’s strengths and needs.
  • 💬 Respectful of diverse communication and behaviour – We honour how your child expresses themselves, even if it’s outside typical norms.
  • 🎯 Focused on support, not judgement – Our goal is to guide next steps, not label children as “ready” or “not ready.”

We believe school should adapt to the child — not the other way around. Read more about our assessment approach here.
