Psychologist completing assessments for children and teens in a supportive setting

Assessments for Children and Teens

At aMAZEin’ Minds Psychology, we provide neuroaffirming assessments for children and teens to better understand how they learn, think, communicate, and manage emotions. Whether you’re seeking answers about learning difficulties, attention challenges, autism, or developmental differences — our psychologists use evidence-based tools and a compassionate approach to help families gain clarity and support.

We work with both neurodivergent and neurotypical children from preschool through high school.

Why Seek an Assessment for Children and Teens?

You may be considering an assessment if your child or teen is:

  • Struggling with reading, writing, or maths
  • Finding it hard to concentrate, stay organised, or follow instructions
  • Showing signs of anxiety, shutdown, or emotional outbursts
  • Finding school overwhelming or refusing to attend
  • Showing strengths and challenges that don’t seem to “fit the mould”
  • Not meeting milestones in language, play, or independence
  • Being flagged by educators or paediatricians for further investigation

Our assessments can provide clarity and direction — not labels for the sake of it, but information to guide real-world support.

Types of Assessments for Children and Teens

We offer a wide range of assessment types tailored to age, developmental stage, and specific areas of concern:

🧠 Cognitive & Learning Assessments

Understand your child’s strengths, processing profile, and academic needs — including screeners for dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia.

ADHD Assessments

Identify attention, hyperactivity, or executive functioning differences using gold-standard tools and parent/teacher input.

🧩 Autism Assessments

Explore traits across communication, social interaction, and sensory experiences in a respectful and identity-affirming way.

🎒 School Readiness Assessments

Evaluate your child’s learning profile, emotional maturity, and adaptive functioning prior to Prep or Kinder transitions.

🧮 Educational Planning & SLD Profiles

Pinpoint learning needs and strengths to inform Individual Learning Plans, NCCD adjustments, and targeted academic support.

💬 Emotional & Behavioural Assessments

Understand what’s behind emotional outbursts, shutdowns, anxiety, or challenges in social and family life.

What to Expect in Assessments for Children and Teens

Assessments typically include:

  • A parent intake and background interview
  • Standardised testing (1–3 sessions depending on type)
  • Behavioural, developmental, and/or school-based questionnaires
  • A detailed written report
  • Feedback session with the psychologist
  • Recommendations for home, school, and supports (e.g. NDIS, IEPs)

Our psychologists make sessions as stress-free and engaging as possible, using breaks, visuals, and play-based strategies when appropriate.
