Child Social Skills Therapy: Helping Kids Build Friendships and Confidence

Child social skills therapy helps children strengthen connection, communication, and self-understanding — all in a way that feels safe, affirming, and developmentally appropriate. At aMAZEin’ Minds, we support neurodivergent and neurotypical children to explore authentic social connection without masking, pressure, or rigid rules.

Our approach is playful, strengths-based, and tailored to each child’s needs, personality, and sensory profile.

Signs Your Child May Benefit from Social Skills Therapy

Not all children communicate or relate in the same way. Your child might benefit from support if they:

These challenges are not misbehaviour, defiance, or rudeness. Instead, they reflect social confusion, sensory overload, or past experiences of exclusion. Therapy can help your child feel more capable and supported in navigating these situations.

What Happens in Child Social Skills Therapy?

We use creative, strengths-based strategies to help your child explore social experiences and practise new skills in a safe, flexible environment. Sessions may include:

  • Building awareness of emotions in self and others
  • Understanding boundaries, consent, and personal space
  • Exploring common peer conflicts through play and story
  • Role-playing friendship dynamics (e.g. joining in, handling rejection)
  • Using visuals and sensory supports to reduce overwhelm
  • Supporting self-advocacy and authentic expression

Depending on your child’s learning style, we may incorporate social stories, visual scripts, group-based games, or individual play therapy. Therapy can be delivered 1:1 or in small groups where appropriate. Nonetheless, we prioritise emotional safety over social performance — always.

Why Choose aMAZEin’ Minds Psychology?

Our Educational & Developmental Psychologists:

  • Tailor therapy to your child’s developmental and communication style
  • Understand the emotional toll of exclusion, rejection, or misunderstanding
  • Avoid scripts or superficial “social skills training” approaches
  • Collaborate with parents, carers, and educators where needed
  • Affirm and celebrate neurodivergent ways of connecting; Neurodivergent children seeking peer connection may benefit from our therapy.

We meet your child where they’re at — no pressure to perform, just support to grow. This means that we don’t teach kids to “pass” as social. We help them understand themselves, communicate their needs, and connect with others in ways that feel genuine — not performative.

💬 Child Social Skills Therapy – FAQ

❓ My child struggles socially but isn’t disruptive. Can this still help?

Absolutely. Many children who internalise their difficulties (e.g. feel left out, anxious, or unsure how to connect) benefit from this support.

❓ Is this only for autistic kids?

No. While we work with many neurodivergent children, our social skills therapy is helpful for any child navigating peer relationships, regardless of diagnosis.

❓ Do you offer group sessions?

Sometimes. Most sessions begin 1:1 to build confidence. If group therapy is suitable, we can explore this as a next step.

❓ What kind of activities do you use?

We use role play, games, visual supports, and storytelling to help children practise communication, boundaries, and peer dynamics in a safe way.
