Giftedness Assessment for Children and Teens
What Is Giftedness?
A giftedness assessment can help you understand your child’s unique cognitive strengths, learning profile, and developmental needs. Giftedness is a complex and nuanced concept — it’s not just about high IQ scores or academic achievement. At aMAZEin’ Minds Psychology, we explore each child’s abilities, challenges, and social-emotional characteristics to build a clearer picture of how they learn, think, and thrive.
Giftedness is a complex and multifaceted concept. It generally refers to individuals—often children—who show advanced abilities or potential in one or more areas, such as intellectual reasoning, creativity, problem-solving, or academic achievement. However, giftedness is not a single trait or score. It can present in many different forms and is often accompanied by unique social-emotional characteristics, asynchronous development, or sensitivities.
Some gifted children excel in standardised IQ testing, while others may show exceptional ability in more specific domains, such as visual-spatial reasoning, verbal expression, or artistic thinking. Importantly, giftedness does not always equate to high academic performance—some gifted children may experience underachievement, boredom, or difficulty adjusting to traditional classroom environments.
Giftedness can co-occur with other neurodevelopmental differences, such as ADHD, autism, or Specific Learning Disorders, sometimes referred to as “twice-exceptionality” (2e). A thoughtful assessment helps to clarify these patterns.
Signs Your Child May Be Gifted
Parents and educators might notice early signs of giftedness such as:
- Advanced vocabulary and early language development
- High curiosity and a desire to ask deep or unusual questions
- Excellent memory and rapid learning
- Intense focus on preferred topics or activities
- A strong sense of justice or fairness
- Emotional intensity and sensitivity
- Creative or divergent thinking
- Preference for older peers or adults
- Resistance to rote learning or repetitive tasks
- Sensory sensitivities or perfectionism
Why Seek a Giftedness Assessment?
A giftedness assessment can:
- Provide insight into your child’s learning profile
- Support appropriate educational planning and enrichment
- Assist with school placement decisions or acceleration options
- Identify twice-exceptionality (2e) when strengths and challenges coexist
- Help understand your child’s social-emotional needs and wellbeing
- Facilitate access to gifted programs, scholarships, or curriculum modifications
Some families seek assessment due to behavioural concerns, school disengagement, or emotional distress in bright children who are not being adequately supported. Others seek clarity around eligibility for gifted programs or to better understand asynchronous development.
What Our Giftedness Assessment Involves
At aMAZEin’ Minds Psychology, our giftedness assessments typically include:
- A detailed intake interview with caregivers
- Comprehensive cognitive testing (e.g., WISC-V or WPPSI-IV)
- Optional academic achievement testing if relevant
- Screening for anxiety, perfectionism, or executive functioning needs
- Exploration of potential 2e profiles and masking
- A strengths-based written report with tailored recommendations
- A feedback session to discuss results, classroom strategies, and extension pathways
Assessments are conducted by educational and developmental psychologists with experience in identifying diverse presentations of giftedness. We value neurodiversity and take a holistic, child-centred approach.
Supporting Twice-Exceptional Learners (2e)
Twice-exceptional children show both advanced ability and areas of difficulty. A 2e child may be highly verbal but struggle with writing, or have brilliant ideas yet fall behind due to ADHD-related executive function challenges. These children are often misunderstood or unsupported in school settings. Our assessments aim to validate both their strengths and their support needs.
We collaborate with families and schools to advocate for appropriate learning plans, whether that means differentiated instruction, enrichment clusters, or support for underlying learning or attention difficulties.
Enrichment Pathways and Educational Options
After identifying giftedness, we can guide families through available options such as:
- Gifted and Talented programs within mainstream schools
- Curriculum compacting or subject acceleration
- Early entrance or grade-skipping pathways (where developmentally appropriate)
- Community enrichment classes or extension programs
- Specialist schooling (e.g., Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) programs)
- Advocacy for Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
We are also happy to liaise with schools, write supporting documentation, or attend Student Support Group (SSG) meetings upon request.
How to Prepare
We recommend:
- Talking to your child about the process in a low-pressure way (e.g., “you’ll get to do different types of puzzles, games and questions to see how your brain works”)
- Ensuring your child is well-rested and nourished on the day
- Bringing along previous school reports or professional assessments, if available
- Letting your child know there’s no pass or fail – it’s about understanding their brain better
