Educational Testing for Children and Teens
At aMAZEin’ Minds Psychology, we offer comprehensive educational testing for children and teens to assess academic performance, identify learning difficulties, and support school-based planning. Educational assessments help create a clear picture of your child’s literacy, numeracy, and learning strengths — and guide practical recommendations for home and school. In many cases, educational testing is completed alongside cognitive testing, as this helps us understand not just what a child is struggling with academically, but why those difficulties may be occurring.
What Is Educational Testing for Children & Teens?
Educational testing (also called academic achievement testing) measures how well a student performs in key skill areas such as:
- Reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension
- Spelling and written expression
- Mathematics concepts and computation
- Oral language and listening comprehension
Educational testing looks at academic skills in action. To fully interpret these results, it is very common to also assess cognitive skills such as memory, processing speed, attention, and language-based thinking, particularly when learning difficulties are suspected.
These assessments help answer questions like:
- Is my child meeting expected academic milestones?
- Are there gaps between their potential and performance?
- Could they have a learning disorder like dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia?
We use gold-standard tools such as:
- WIAT-III (Wechsler Individual Achievement Test)
- YARC (York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension)
- Woodcock-Johnson IV Tests of Achievement (in selected cases)
- Additional reading screeners and writing samples where helpful
When Is Educational Testing Recommended?
Educational assessments may be helpful when:
- A child is underachieving or has inconsistent school results
- Teachers or parents notice gaps in literacy or numeracy
- There’s concern about reading, spelling, writing, or maths
- A learning disorder is suspected (e.g. dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia)
- The school needs data to support an Individual Learning Plan (ILP)
- Additional evidence is needed for NDIS or allied health referrals
- A previous diagnosis needs updating for transition or funding
- Strengths or giftedness need to be documented for curriculum planning
When there is a gap between a child’s potential and their performance, cognitive testing helps us understand the underlying learning processes contributing to this gap. This combined approach often leads to clearer diagnoses and more targeted recommendations.
What to Expect in the Assessment Process
Our educational assessments typically include:
- Parent intake session (50 minutes)
- Testing session with your child (usually 4 hours)
- Scoring and clinical interpretation
- Comprehensive written report
- Feedback session to discuss results and next steps
Testing is done one-on-one in a supportive and neuroaffirming environment. Breaks and regulation supports are available as needed.
Educational Testing Supports Your Child
The results of an educational assessment can:
- Clarify learning difficulties and strengths
- Support classroom adjustments or targeted interventions
- Inform ILPs, tutor planning, or specialist referrals
- Provide documentation for specialist applications
- Reduce stress by explaining why a child is struggling and how to help
We aim to present findings in a clear, practical report for families and educators.
