Eating Disorder Psychologist | Medicare Rebates for Psychological Support
Seeing an eating disorder psychologist with Medicare can provide vital support for recovery. Under a specific treatment plan, Medicare offers rebates for psychological treatment for individuals experiencing eating disorders — including anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder.
What Are Eating Disorder Psychological Treatment Services?
Medicare provides a specialised rebate program for eating disorder treatment, separate from standard Mental Health Care Plans. This initiative allows eligible clients to access up to:
- 40 individual sessions with an eating disorder psychologist
- 20 dietetic sessions (if referred to a dietitian)
This is available under the Eating Disorder Treatment and Management Plan (EDP).
How to Access a Medicare-Rebated Eating Disorder Psychologist
To access support from an eating disorder psychologist via Medicare, follow these steps:
Book an appointment with your GP or psychiatrist.
Your doctor will assess your symptoms and eligibility for an EDP.
If appropriate, they will complete a Medicare Eating Disorder Plan and provide a referral.
Send your referral to our clinic by email or secure upload.
Begin treatment with one of our psychologists experienced in eating disorder recovery.
Referral item numbers include 82363 (clinic-based) and 93087 (telehealth).
Who Is Eligible for an Eating Disorder Treatment Plan?
You may be eligible for this Medicare initiative if you meet diagnostic criteria for:
- Anorexia nervosa
- Bulimia nervosa
- Binge Eating Disorder
- OSFED (Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders)
- Severe disordered eating with medical or psychological risk
Both adults and young people (aged 13 and over) may be referred. Speak with your GP for an initial assessment.
What Can an Eating Disorder Psychologist Help With?
Our team offers neuroaffirming and evidence-based support to address:
- Eating and body image concerns
- Weight and shape-related anxiety
- Emotional regulation
- Shame and perfectionism
- Unhelpful coping behaviours
- Recovery planning and relapse prevention
Therapy may include CBT-E, ACT, mindfulness, self-compassion, or DBT-informed strategies. Family involvement can also be supported where appropriate.
How Much Do Sessions Cost?
Out-of-pocket expenses apply and details can be found on our Fees page.
With a valid Medicare Eating Disorder Plan, clients receive a rebate of approximately $96.65 per 50-minute session.
