Grief and Loss Counselling | Support Through Change, Absence, and Heartache

Grief and loss counselling offers compassionate support for anyone navigating the pain of losing someone — or something — deeply meaningful. Grief can follow the death of a loved one, but it can also emerge after a relationship ends, a life path changes, or a long-held hope is no longer possible. However it appears, grief is a natural and valid response to loss. In counselling, we create space to acknowledge what’s been lost, process complex feelings, and begin to gently rebuild a sense of meaning and connection.

What Grief and Loss Can Look Like

Grief doesn’t always show up the way people expect. It may include:

  • Intense sadness or emotional numbness
  • Anger, guilt, or shame
  • Difficulty concentrating or functioning at work
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or motivation
  • Tearfulness, irritability, or withdrawal
  • Feeling “stuck,” hollow, or like life has lost colour

You may also find yourself people-pleasing, minimising your pain, or trying to carry on as if nothing happened. These are all valid responses.

🌀 Grief Isn’t a Straight Line

Many people expect grief to follow “five stages” — denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. While this framework is well known, it was originally developed to describe people facing terminal illness. Today, research shows that grief and loss don’t move in neat stages (read more here). They come in waves, loop back on themselves, and look different for everyone. Feeling okay one day and overwhelmed the next is not a setback — it’s part of the process.

Types of Grief We Support in Counselling

Grief doesn’t only happen after death. We support people navigating many kinds of loss, including:

Bereavement

The death of a loved one — including complicated or long-ago grief.

Disenfranchised or invisible grief

Losses that aren’t always acknowledged by others, such as:

  • Miscarriage, stillbirth, or infertility
  • Pet loss
  • Relationship breakdowns
  • Estrangement from family
  • Chronic illness or disability
  • Queer grief and loss within marginalised communities

Grief for the not-actualised

Grief can also come from:

  • Missed milestones or delayed life stages
  • Lost time or late diagnosis
  • Unlived identities or roles
  • Futures that never unfolded

If your grief doesn’t “fit the mould,” it’s still real — and it still matters.

How Grief and Loss Counselling Supports You

In therapy, we create a non-judgemental space to:

  • Name and validate your emotional experience
  • Honour the significance of your loss
  • Process complex feelings like guilt, numbness, or anger
  • Understand your unique grief response
  • Reconnect with meaning and identity
  • Carry your grief with more ease, not erase it

Grief and loss counselling is not about “getting over it.” It’s about moving forward with compassion and support.

🕯️ Grief and Loss Counselling – FAQ

What if my grief doesn’t make sense to other people?

Your grief doesn’t need to be understood by others to be real. Therapy is a space where your loss will be acknowledged and respected — even if others can’t see it.

Can I still come to therapy if the loss happened a long time ago?

Yes — there’s no time limit on grief. Longstanding losses can still carry pain, especially if they weren’t fully recognised at the time.

Is it grief, or is it depression?

Grief and depression can overlap, but they’re not the same. We’ll support you to explore your experience gently, without pathologising your emotions.

Do I have to talk about the loss directly?

Not at all. Counselling moves at your pace — there’s no pressure to go anywhere you’re not ready for.
