Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs): Understanding Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, and Dyscalculia

At aMAZEin’ Minds Psychology, we support individuals of all ages with Specific Learning Disorders—persistent challenges with reading, writing, or mathematics. These neurodevelopmental conditions affect how the brain processes information, but with early identification and the right support, people with SLDs can thrive.

This page provides an overview of what SLDs are and how they are assessed. You’ll also find links to detailed service pages for each type of learning disorder we assess:

What Are Specific Learning Disorders?

Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) refer to significant difficulties in one or more areas of academic functioning—despite adequate teaching, intelligence, and opportunity. These include:

  • SLD with impairment in reading (dyslexia)
  • SLD with impairment in written expression (dysgraphia)
  • SLD with impairment in mathematics (dyscalculia)

These are lifelong conditions that require tailored strategies, but with the right diagnosis and intervention, individuals can succeed academically and emotionally.

How Are SLDs Diagnosed?

SLDs are diagnosed through a comprehensive psychological assessment that typically includes:

  • Cognitive testing to evaluate thinking, memory, and processing
  • Academic testing to assess reading, writing, and maths skills
  • Interviews and questionnaires with parents, teachers, and the individual

A diagnosis considers the persistence of learning difficulties over time, the severity of the issue, and whether other explanations (such as language barriers, hearing issues, or trauma) have been ruled out.

Before Assessing for Specific Learning Disorders: What to Check First

Before booking a formal learning assessment, we recommend:

  • Ensuring your child has had a recent vision and hearing check
  • Reviewing school support already trialled (e.g. tutoring, learning plans)
  • Gathering school reports and examples of work
  • Considering whether difficulties may stem from emotional or attentional challenges
