Cognitive Testing for Children and Teens

At aMAZEin’ Minds Psychology, we provide comprehensive cognitive testing for children and teens to help identify learning strengths, areas of difficulty, and support needs. Our assessments are tailored to each child and may be used for school planning, educational reports, diagnostic clarification, and funding access.

Cognitive testing often forms the foundation for many other types of assessments, including those for ADHD, autism, specific learning disorders (like dyslexia or dyscalculia), giftedness, and functional capacity. While it is rarely conducted in isolation, understanding what cognitive testing is — and what it measures — is essential for families navigating the assessment process. This page outlines the purpose and process of cognitive evaluations.

What Is Cognitive Testing for Children & Teens?

Cognitive testing (often called an IQ test or cognitive assessment) measures a child’s thinking and learning abilities. It assesses areas such as verbal comprehension, visual-spatial skills, working memory, fluid reasoning, and processing speed. These evaluations provide insight into how a child processes information and can guide recommendations for school or intervention planning.

We use gold-standard tools such as:

  • WISC-V (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children – 6 to 16 years)

  • WPPSI-IV (Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence – 2.5 to 7 years)

  • WAIS (Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale – for older teens, if appropriate)

  • CTOPP-2 (Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing – for reading-related processing skills)

  • Woodcock-Johnson IV Tests of Cognitive Abilities (in selected cases to explore broader cognitive domains)

When Is Cognitive Testing for Children and Teens Recommended?

Cognitive assessments may be helpful when:

  • A child is struggling academically or not meeting expected developmental milestones
  • There are concerns about learning difficulties, giftedness, or neurodevelopmental conditions such as ADHD or autism
  • Schools require documentation to support Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), VCAA Special Examination Arrangements, or Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD) funding
  • Families are seeking NDIS access, educational recommendations, or referrals to allied health or specialist education services
  • Assessment is needed to support select-entry school applications or scholarship testing
  • Planning is underway for a transition to a new learning environment or educational setting

What Does the Cognitive Assessment Process Involve?

Our child and teen cognitive assessments typically include:

  1. Initial intake session with parent/carer (50 mins)
  2. Cognitive testing session with the child (approx. 1.5–2 hours)
  3. Scoring, interpretation and report writing
  4. Feedback session to go through results and recommendations

Each assessment is conducted in a neuroaffirming, child-centred way. We ensure your child feels safe and supported throughout.

How Are Cognitive Testing Results Used for Children?

Your child’s cognitive profile will help identify their strengths and any areas needing support. Recommendations may include:

  • Classroom accommodations or ILP goals
  • Referrals for speech, OT, or academic intervention
  • NDIS or allied health planning
  • Access to additional testing (e.g. achievement testing, autism or ADHD evaluation)

You’ll receive a detailed written report that can be shared with schools, paediatricians, and therapists.

Funding and Referrals for Cognitive Testing

Our assessments are eligible for private, NDIS, or plan-managed funding. While Medicare rebates are not typically available for cognitive testing alone, they may apply if testing is part of a broader diagnostic assessment.

If your child is under 25 and referred by a paediatrician or psychiatrist, MBS item 82000 may be applicable. Speak with us to clarify eligibility.
