Autism and Communication Differences in Children

Autism Assessment for Children and Teens

Our autism assessment for children and teens is designed to be clear, affirming, and supportive from start to finish. At aMAZEin’ Minds Psychology, we work with families seeking clarity around their child’s development, behaviour, or sensory profile — whether for understanding, school support, or NDIS access.

We assess across a wide age range and welcome children with diverse communication styles, strengths, and needs.

Autism and Communication Differences in Children

Why Seek an Autism Assessment?

You may be wondering whether your child is on the autism spectrum if you’ve noticed:

  • Differences in communication or play
  • Intense interests or sensory sensitivities
  • Shutdowns, meltdowns, or emotional overload
  • Difficulty with flexibility or unexpected changes
  • A strong preference for routines or sameness
  • Masking at school and emotional release at home
  • Delayed milestones, social withdrawal, or unique interaction styles

We also see many children who have been misunderstood or mislabelled — especially girls, non-binary children, and those with strong language or social compensation strategies.

What the Autism Assessment Involves

We use a combination of gold-standard tools, developmental history, and our clinical expertise to ensure the process is both thorough and respectful.

Assessment process includes:

  • Parent/caregiver intake interview
  • Standardised social and communication measures (e.g. ADOS-2, SRS-2, SCQ)
  • Play-based or semi-structured observation sessions
  • Questionnaires for home and school (where applicable)
  • Review of developmental, sensory, and behavioural history
  • Comprehensive written report with recommendations
  • Feedback session with your psychologist to go through results

Assessments are tailored to each child’s age, language ability, and sensory profile.
