Adult AuDHD Assessment Pricing and Process

This page outlines the typical process and fees for an adult AuDHD assessment at aMAZEin’ Minds Psychology in Mount Waverley, Melbourne.

AuDHD is an informal term commonly used when autism and ADHD occur together. A combined assessment considers the diagnostic criteria for each condition while also examining developmental history, everyday functioning, areas of overlap, and possible alternative or co-occurring explanations.

The pathway below represents our typical adult AuDHD assessment process. Assessment is tailored to the individual, and the process may vary where previous assessment information is available or where the referral questions require a different approach.

For broader information about combined autism and ADHD assessment, see our Adult AuDHD Assessment page.

Typical Adult AuDHD Assessment Process

1. Initial Assessment Session – 100 Minutes

The initial session gathers detailed developmental, educational, occupational, social, and clinical history and clarifies the questions the assessment is intended to answer.

Areas discussed may include:

  • Early development and childhood experiences.
  • Education and learning history.
  • Work and study.
  • Relationships and social experiences.
  • Attention, organisation, and everyday functioning.
  • Relevant sensory and environmental experiences.
  • Previous diagnoses, assessments, and psychological or medical history.

You may attend the initial session independently. Where appropriate and available, information from a parent, sibling, partner, or another person who knows you well may also contribute to the assessment.

2. Cognitive Assessment – 100 Minutes

Our typical adult AuDHD pathway includes an in-person cognitive assessment examining areas such as reasoning, working memory, and processing speed.

Cognitive testing does not diagnose autism or ADHD. It provides additional information about cognitive functioning that is interpreted alongside developmental history, clinical interviews, questionnaires, observations, and other relevant assessment evidence.

Where previous cognitive testing has already been completed, please provide the report before booking so we can consider whether repeat assessment is necessary.

3. Feedback Session – 50 Minutes

The feedback appointment provides an opportunity to discuss the assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions where applicable, and recommendations.

We will explain how the available evidence has been interpreted and answer questions about the results and next steps.

4. Comprehensive Report

A comprehensive written report brings together the relevant developmental history, assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions where applicable, and recommendations.

Recommendations are tailored to the assessment findings and may relate to work, study, everyday functioning, psychological support, environmental adjustments, executive functioning, further medical consultation, or other supports where relevant.

What Is Included in the Assessment?

Depending on the individual referral questions, the broader assessment process may draw on:

  • Detailed developmental and clinical history.
  • Autism-specific assessment methods.
  • ADHD-specific clinical assessment and questionnaires.
  • Self-report information.
  • Collateral information where appropriate and available.
  • Review of school reports, previous psychological reports, or other relevant records.
  • Cognitive assessment.
  • Consideration of alternative and co-occurring developmental, psychological, learning, and medical factors.

There is no single test that diagnoses AuDHD, autism, or ADHD. Assessment findings are based on the integration of multiple sources of information.

What If I Already Have an Autism or ADHD Diagnosis?

An existing diagnosis does not automatically need to be repeated.

If you have previously completed a comprehensive autism or ADHD assessment, please send us the report before booking where possible.

We can consider what information is already available and whether the assessment pathway can be adjusted to focus on the remaining referral question.

What If I Have Already Completed Cognitive Testing?

Please provide the previous report before booking.

Whether repeat cognitive assessment is useful depends on factors including:

  • Which assessment was completed.
  • When it was completed.
  • Your age at the time.
  • The original referral question.
  • The information contained in the report.
  • The questions you are now hoping to answer.

Where suitable existing information is available, we aim to avoid unnecessary duplication of assessment.

Preparing for Your Adult AuDHD Assessment

Before your appointment, please provide any information that may help us understand your developmental and assessment history.

Where available, this may include:

  • Previous psychological, autism, ADHD, cognitive, or learning assessment reports.
  • School reports or educational records.
  • Relevant medical or allied health reports.
  • Information about previous diagnoses or treatment.

You do not need to have complete childhood documentation in order to enquire about assessment. If limited developmental information is available, this can be discussed with the psychologist and considered when interpreting the available evidence.

Payment and Billing

Telehealth appointments: Pre-paid by card or bank transfer where applicable.

In-person appointments: Payment can be made in the clinic by card or bank transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Need a Referral?

No referral is required to book a private adult AuDHD assessment with a psychologist.

A referral may nevertheless be required if you are seeking access to a particular Medicare item or another externally funded service.

Are Medicare Rebates Available?

Medicare rebates are not automatically available for a private AuDHD assessment.

Some people aged under 25 may be eligible for particular Medicare allied health assessment items where the assessment relates to a suspected complex neurodevelopmental disorder, such as autism, and all referral and MBS requirements are met.

This does not mean that the entire AuDHD assessment is automatically eligible for a rebate, and these items are not ADHD-specific rebates.

If you are aged under 25 and wish to explore Medicare eligibility, please discuss this with the referring medical practitioner and our team before commencing assessment.

You can view the current requirements for MBS item 82000 and related complex neurodevelopmental disorder assessment services.

Can NDIS Funding Be Used for an AuDHD Diagnostic Assessment?

NDIS funding should not be assumed to cover a diagnostic AuDHD assessment.

Current NDIS guidance identifies diagnostic assessments and screening services as responsibilities of the health system rather than supports generally funded by the NDIS.

A psychological or diagnostic assessment report may nevertheless be relevant as supporting evidence when someone is applying to the NDIS or providing evidence about disability and functional impact.

Whether a particular report is sufficient for an NDIS purpose is determined by the NDIA, and completion of an autism or AuDHD assessment does not itself establish NDIS eligibility.

You can read current information about NDIS supporting evidence.

What If No One Is Available to Provide Childhood Information?

Developmental history is important when assessing both autism and ADHD, but adults vary considerably in the information available to them.

Where a parent or other childhood informant is unavailable, other sources of information may be considered, such as school reports, previous records, siblings, extended family members, or the adult’s own detailed developmental history.

The psychologist will consider the available evidence and any limitations this creates when reaching conclusions.

Can a Psychologist Prescribe ADHD Medication?

No. Psychologists do not prescribe medication.

If ADHD is identified and you would like to consider medication, you will need to discuss this with an appropriately authorised medical practitioner.
