Functional Capacity Assessments – Pricing & Process

Why Have a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A functional capacity assessment provides a clear and practical understanding of how a person is functioning in their everyday life. Rather than focusing only on diagnosis, it explores how someone manages daily tasks, engages with others, and participates in meaningful activities across different environments.

Many individuals and families seek a functional capacity assessment when they need clarity around support needs, particularly when navigating systems such as the NDIS.

A functional capacity assessment may be helpful if you:

  • Are applying for the NDIS and need evidence of functional support needs.
  • Are preparing for an NDIS plan review and require updated information.
  • Want a clearer understanding of strengths and areas where support may be beneficial.
  • Are experiencing challenges with daily living, organisation, emotional regulation, or participation.
  • Need guidance on what types of supports, therapies, or services may be most helpful.

An NDIS functional capacity assessment provides detailed, evidence-based information that can be used to support funding decisions and ensure supports are appropriately matched to an individual’s needs.

Importantly, a functional capacity assessment is not about identifying what someone “can’t do.” Instead, it is about understanding how a person experiences their environment, what supports enable them to participate more fully, and how to build on their existing strengths.

The outcome is a comprehensive report that offers clear recommendations, helping individuals, families, and support teams move forward with greater confidence and direction.

Important Note
The structure and pricing outlined on this page represent a typical assessment pathway. Every client’s needs are unique, and in some cases sessions may differ, or there may be overlap between assessment types to best answer your specific referral questions. What Is Included in a Functional Capacity Assessment?

Our functional capacity assessments are comprehensive and tailored to the individual. The total cost typically reflects several components:

  • Initial intake session to understand background, goals, and current supports.
  • Assessment sessions exploring daily functioning, executive functioning, and participation.
  • Review of collateral information (e.g., reports, questionnaires, or input from supports).
  • Integration of findings across functional domains.
  • A detailed written report aligned with NDIS requirements.
  • Feedback session to walk through results and recommendations.

Each assessment is individualised, meaning the structure may vary slightly depending on your needs.

NDIS Funding and Functional Capacity Assessment Cost

A functional capacity assessment may be funded through an NDIS plan, typically under Capacity Building supports.

An NDIS functional capacity assessment is often used to:

  • Support access to the NDIS
  • Provide evidence for plan reviews
  • Justify support needs and funding levels

If you are unsure whether your funding can be used, we are happy to talk this through with you.

Factors That Influence Cost

Functional capacity assessment cost can vary based on:

  • Complexity of presentation
  • Number of settings involved (e.g., home, school, community)
  • Amount of collateral information to review
  • Level of detail required in the report
  • Additional assessment sessions if needed

We aim to keep the process as efficient and focused as possible while still providing a high-quality, clinically meaningful report.

Why Invest in a Functional Capacity Assessment?

A high-quality functional capacity assessment provides more than just information — it offers clear direction.

It can help:

  • Clarify support needs across everyday life.
  • Strengthen NDIS applications or plan reviews.
  • Guide intervention planning and support services.
  • Provide a shared understanding across families, clinicians, and support teams.
